Firewise California

It is becoming increasing clear that those of us in fire prone states need to do more to create safer structures in which to live and work.  Unfortunately, current building codes are not sufficient to address the vulnerability of structures in these landscapes.  Older homes and commercial buildings are especially vulnerable.

However, there are many protective measures that can be taken to enhance the fire resistance and survivability of an older building.  Most buildings can be "hardened" to resist the onslaught of  wind blown embers and radiant heat.

These measures include:

  • Replacing exterior wood with non-combustible alternatives

  • Replacing wood doors, decks, porches, stairs, railings and fences with alternatives

  • Retrofitting  standard plate-glass windows with heat resistant tempered glass

  • Adding exterior sprinklers, clearing defensible space and improving escape routes
